ZAGHNAL, Combat Axe and Hammer

The Zaghnal is a type of “crow’s beak” shaped and narrow blade axe with a fixed spike on the opposite side. I was used as a piercing weapon.

In this piece, the steel blade, is decorated on both sided by figurative representations of a monarch and a female divinity, made in high-relief brass. The reverse of the blade exhibits a Shatri temple. The wooden handle has brass mountings and finished in a still point.

It is a kind of axe that could have been used both for warring and ceremonial ends.

It is part of a group of Indian weapons taken by the British army in the first half of the 19th century.

O Zaghnal é um tipo de machado de lâmina estreita em formato de “bico de corvo”, com um espigão fixo do lado oposto. Era usado como arma perfurante.

Neste exemplar, a lâmina em aço, está ornamentada nos dois lados, por representações figuradas de um monarca e de uma divindade feminina, realizadas em latão e em alto-relevo. A contra lâmina, exibe um templo Shatri.

O cabo de madeira, contém guarnições de latão e termina em ponta de aço.

Trata-se de um tipo de machado que tanto podia ser utilizado para fins de guerra como para actos cerimoniais.

Faz parte de um grupo de armas indianas tomadas pelo exército britânico na primeira metade do século XIX.
