MEMPO - Half-mask covering the face below the level of the eyes, frequently with a removable nose piece, like this one.

This Mempo is from the Edo period (1603-1867).

The "Family Crest" or "Moon" is - Bit (kutsuwa) : Kutsuwais supposedly a dialectal variation of kuhiwa (muzzele). The bit is an iron fitting which is inserted into a horse's mouth to fasten the reins. The crests were mostly used to symbolize martial spirit, but Christians seeking to covertly display their faith also adopted the cross-like patterns. The Crest is over the Stingray Skin in the neck protection.

MEMPO – Meia-máscara que cobre a face abaixo dos olhos, frequentemente com peça amovível que cobre o nariz, com este exemplar.

Este Mempo é do período Edo (1603-1867).

A “Insígnia” da família ou “Moon” é – Anel de Bridão (kutsuwa): Kutsuwais supostamente uma variação dialéctica de kuhiwa (focinho/cabresto). O Bridão é uma peça de metal que se insere na boca do cavalo para prender às rédeas. As Insígnias “Moon”, eram sobretudo usadas para simbolizar o espírito marcial, mas os Cristãos pretendendo disfarçadamente exibir a sua fé, também adoptaram diversos padrões simbolizando cruzes. A Insígnia “Moon” está sobre a pele de raia que protege o pescoço.
